Joel is walking In Their Shoes
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The Loran Smith Center's annual fundraiser the In Their Shoes 10K, is virtually upon us. I will run my 10K tomorrow morning, and as I clock each mile, I will be reflecting on the thousands of lives the Center has touched in its 20-year existence.
Throughout the past two decades the Center’s mission has not changed nor has our commitment to providing all services at no cost to anyone affected by cancer regardless of where they are diagnosed or treated. Never has there been a time when that aspect of our care was more important. The personal financial devastation that COVID-19 has wrought in so many lives is multiplied for people trying to afford cancer treatment. At the same time, cancer support programs that help patients manage stress, build resilience and receive timely, accurate information are in greater demand.
That is why the In Their Shoes 10k along with your support is so important. I hope you will take this opportunity to support the Loran Smith Center by donating to my walk. By donating you are honoring the work that we do but more importantly, every dollar you send will provide direct benefit to patients and family members who use our services. From consultations with an oncology-trained nurse navigator to counseling with a licensed social worker, nutrition consults, online support groups and classes to help manage treatment; the Loran Smith Center is a vital resource for anyone affected by cancer.
The In Their Shoes 10k is symbolic of the long, arduous journey through cancer treatment and recovery. As we walk we remember the people in our lives who are still on that difficult path, those we’ve lost, and survivors who still bear the scars. I hope you will join me and my fellow walkers in making sure that the Loran Smith Center is here for another twenty years with open doors and a menu of programs to bring relief to anyone affected by cancer.
